Binocular Rivalry

چکیده

When two different images are shown, one to each eye, we don't always see a mix of the two. In cases when the images differ in atleast one attribute we may see only one image at a time and this alternates between the two images. (eg: Horizontal and vertical gratings differ in the direction of grating. When horizontal grating is shown to say right eye and vertical grating to left eye we see only one of these two first. After a few seconds duration the other grating appears replacing the first one. After a few more seconds the first grating appears again and so on – they alternate). When one searches for a term referring to this phenomenon one comes across two terms – binocular rivalry and interocular rivalry. At first glance a beginner may think that both are the same. However they are very different as described in the next section.

Binocular rivalry produced by temporal frequency differences

When the eyes view images that are sufficiently different to prevent binocular fusion, binocular rivalry occurs and the images are seen sequentially in a stochastic alternation. Here we examine whether temporal frequency differences will trigger binocular rivalry by presenting two dynamic random-pixel arrays that are spatially matched but which modulate temporally at two different rates. We fou...

A Primer on Binocular Rivalry, Including Current Controversies

Among psychologists and vision scientists, binocular rivalry has enjoyed sustained interest for decades dating back to the 19th century. In recent years, however, rivalry’s audience has expanded to include neuroscientists who envision rivalry as a “tool” for exploring the neural concomitants of conscious visual awareness and perceptual organization. For rivalry’s potential to be realized, worke...

Neural Mechanisms for Binocular Depth, Rivalry and Multistability

The purpose of this chapter is to present a review of recent functional neuroimaging (fMRI) studies of binocular vision, including binocular depth and rivalry, as well as a review of studies of perceptual multistability. As such, we will first emphasize the binocular aspects of binocular rivalry, while later emphasizing the rivalrous aspects. The interrelationship of binocular depth and rivalry...

Binocular Rivalry and Head-Worn Displays

OBJECTIVE We provide a review and analysis of much of the published literature on binocular rivalry that is relevant to the design and use of head-worn displays (HWDs). BACKGROUND This review draws heavily from both the basic vision literature and applied HWD literature in order to help provide insight for minimizing the effects of binocular rivalry when HWDs are worn. METHOD Included in th...

Attentional Modulation of Binocular Rivalry

Ever since Wheatstone initiated the scientific study of binocular rivalry, it has been debated whether the phenomenon is under attentional control. In recent years, the issue of attentional modulation of binocular rivalry has seen a revival. Here we review the classical studies as well as recent advances in the study of attentional modulation of binocular rivalry. We show that (1) voluntary con...

Rival ideas about binocular rivalry

Binocular rivalry has been used to investigate neural correlates of visual awareness. For this investigation to succeed, however, it is necessary to know what rivals during binocular rivalry. Recent work has raised questions about whether rivalry is between eyes or between stimuli. We find that stimulus rivalry occurs only within a limited range of spatial and temporal parameters--otherwise eye...
